Robert A. Chermside Jr., 71, died 2/6/98 in Blacksburg after a long illness. Professor Chermside taught English at Virginia Tech from 1955 until 1986 and was known as a superb chess player, a talented guitarist, and an expert grammarian. He had a B.S. from the University of Virginia and an M.A. from the University of Richmond.
