HAVING A HEART FOR SERVICE
Since the April 16 tragedy, Hokies around the world have lived up to the university's motto of Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) in an effort to honor the victims' lives. At the heart of this effort is VT-ENGAGE, an initiative that promotes the already thriving Hokie Spirit of service to others.
STEPPING STONES TO THE MOON--AND BEYOND
NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is the first step toward gaining further insight into Earth's closest neighbor. Scientists involved in the project, including a fair share of Hokies, hope to pave the path to life on the moon and, eventually, to our more distant neighbors.
PATHWAYS FOR LEARNING: AN EDUCATIONAL MODEL FOR
In 2006, Pathways for Learning was conceived as an educational ideal that could help students map out their futures. Nearly three years later, administrators and staff across the university are embracing pathways that will prepare students to be the key leaders and thinkers of the future.

Now in the design phase, the Center for the Arts is at the core of the Arts Initiative's mission to enhance the presence and practice of the arts university-wide--and to cultivate dynamic collaborations on campus and beyond.
HOMER HICKAM: REFLECTIONS OF A ROCKET BOY
From his school-age days launching rockets in Coalwood, W.Va., to his current endeavors hunting dinosaur bones, Homer Hickam '64, whose book Rocket Boys inspired the film "October Sky," has worn several hats: engineer, writer, scuba instructor, amateur archeologist, and, of course, Virginia Tech alumnus.
