Alumnus Obituary

Henry Dekker (accounting '47), of Blacksburg, Va., former rector of the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors, died June 13 at age 90. Dekker was a longtime member of the Pamplin Advisory Council and a recipient of the Pamplin College of Business Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1990. He also was the class ring collection namesake for the Class of 1998. In 1999, Dekker was awarded the William Henry Ruffner Medal, the university's highest honor for dedicated and distinguished service. He was a senior benefactor of the Ut Prosim Society, a member of the Legacy Society, and a former board member of the William Preston Society.

While at Virginia Tech, Dekker served in the Corps of Cadets from September 1940 until March 1943. He was elected president of the Class of 1944 for each of three years and was elected president of the Corps of Cadets in January 1943. He also served as vice president of the German Club (1942-43) and president in 1946 and 1947.


Faculty Obituary

Edward McPherson, learning technologies support specialist, died July 4. Born in Mississippi and raised on Chicago's Westside, McPherson was the first in his family to attend college after graduating from Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. He then went on to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania in 1976. After pursuing a career in finance and banking at Swiss Bank in New York City, he moved his family to Roanoke to pursue his passions for youth, technology, and education, and had been a member of the Virginia Tech community over the past decade.

Stephen W. Liskey (mechanical engineering '76), who worked for PPL Corporation exactly two days shy of 35 years, was killed June 11 in an accident outside the Lincoln Tunnel. Liskey's friends and coworkers held a flag-raising ceremony in his honor, and a Virginia Tech flag now flies proudly over PPL-Brunner Island in York Haven, Pa., where Liskey's office was located.
