FACULTY and FRIENDS DEATHS

Arthur Eastman, died 7/21/97 in Green Valley, Ariz. Eastman, former head of Virginia Tech's English department, was a literary scholar, teacher, and editor. He was the originator and principal editor of eight editions of The Norton Anthology of Poetry and The Masterpieces of Drama.

Carol M. Newman Jr., 6/2/97. Newman was raised in Blacksburg, graduated from Virginia Tech in 1931, and taught in the English department for several years, after his retirement from an editor position at the New Yorker magazine. The Virginia Tech library is named for his father.

Paul J. Driscoll, died 9/9/97, of an apparent heart attack while on educational leave in New Zealand. Driscoll was an associate professor of agricultural and applied economics, with a specialty in measuring consumer demand for food. Before joining the Virginia Tech faculty, he worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as a project director for International Human Assistance Programs in the Philippines, and in the Peace Corps in the Philippines.
