FACULTY and FRIENDS' DEATHS

Linda Gail Leffel, professor emeritus of continuing education, died April 8, 2004. Leffel earned her master's and doctorate in education at Virginia Tech in 1973, and then became a member of the university's faculty and an administrator in the Division of Continuing Education. She served as director of program development from 1988 until 2001, when she was named head of market research. She retired in 2002 for health reasons. "For over 30 years, Linda served the university and the people of the commonwealth with distinction," said John E. Dooley, vice provost for Outreach and International Affairs. "She was a giant in the continuing and professional education field whose leadership and contributions will be felt for years to come."

George Davis Jones Sr., former professor of agronomy, died Dec. 23. Jones, who earned his bachelor's degree in horticulture with a minor in agronomy from Virginia Tech in 1943, was assistant professor of agronomy at Piedmont Research Station for 40 years. During that time, he researched soil types and erosion, varietal soybeans, and plant and seed diseases, and he was instrumental in developing the no-tillage concept for crop production. Jones' research was published extensively, including many articles printed in the Agronomy Journal. He also helped many local farmers with crop management, plant diseases, and insect infestations. After retiring, Jones started an apple and peach orchard in order to give away the produce.

Robert W. Blanton Sr., former Extension leader for 4-H Youth with the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, died Jan. 17. Blanton earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in agricultural education from Virginia Tech, then went on to spend 30 years as an Extension leader working with Virginia 4-H. After his retirement, he continued his lifetime's work of community service by volunteering for several organizations, including the Blacksburg Host Lions Club, the Blacksburg Senior Center, the Blacksburg AARP, and the Montgomery County Friends of the Library. Last fall, Blanton was named Volunteer of the Year by the senior center, and in spring 2004, he received the Jim and Lenna Moore Community Service and Citizenship Award, sponsored by multiple groups.
