Faculty and Friends Deaths

Joan L. Curcio (educational administration Ed.D. '81) died 7/7/99 following a long illness. She was 65. Curcio was a former professor of educational leadership and policy studies and former director of educational programs at Tech's Northern Virginia Center.

Dennis L. Eavey died 6/13/99 at age 50. He was a senior manager in Personnel Services. Eavey came to Tech in 1977 and was one of the originators of the university's service-awards program. For the last five years, he was a senior manager responsible for human resource consultation services in employment, recruitment, training, and employee relations.

Karl Hereford died 5/23/99 at age 72. Hereford was the founder and first dean for the College of Education. Called "a visionary," Hereford was credited with preparing the college for accreditation by rearranging the college's structure and curriculum.

Adger Johnson '28 died 7/8/99. A graduate in chemical engineering, he had a long career with Union Carbide, culminating in his appointment as vice-chairman in 1967. Johnson served on the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors from 1964 to 1973, was a member of the William Preston Society and the Legacy Society, and received the university's Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1973.

E.T. (Ervin) Kornegay died 7/2/99 in a swimming accident while on vacation with his family. He was 67. Kornegay was a professor in the department of animal and poultry science. He was a specialist in the area of swine nutrition and considered one of the top experts in the field.

Billy Gene Williams died 7/29/99 following a courageous battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was 67. Williams was retired from the department of chemical engineering and had fond memories of the students he taught over the years.
